Steal

Just kinda curious about the stealing code, and if this seems correct. I've been noticing that no matter what the level of the assisting mob, or the number of assisting mobs, it will *always* spot me stealing stuff.

I just figured that lvl/dex should count towards this a bit more than it appears to.

Eg:

Farmhouse Cellar

Several bushels of various crops are stacked in nice piles around the
cellar. Being underground and protected from all forms of heat, the
temperature is generally a little colder than the rest of the house. It is
cold enough to keep the food from spoiling yet warm enough to keep it from
freezing. A stairway leads back up to the kitchen.
Obvious exits: up.
You see six winemasters.

(149 H 47 M 1408118X): A cellar rat just arrived.
(149 H 47 M 1408118X): The Airship Challenger arrives at the Kab'Tung Oasis.
peek mas 6
(149 H 47 M 1408118X): He's oblivious to your rummaging.
He is carrying: some mithril-studded leggings.
He has 0 gold coins.
(149 H 47 M 1408118X): A wine maid just arrived.
steal leg mas 6
(149 H 47 M 1408118X): You succeeded.
The wine maid notices you in the act and attacks!

But that's what they are supposed to do, assisting mobs will assist!

I suppose that makes sense though - make it so you have to pass a "chance to spot" check, on each assisting mob in the room, so that with 10 wine maids, maybe only 2 end up assisting on a successful steal. On a failed steal, everything that normally assists the target mob, will.

A related idea would be, to have them not assist, but instead, based on the number of assisting mobs in the room, have your overall steal success percentage be lowered accordingly.

The way it acts now is fine with them "catching" me in the act, but not preventing it makes the most sense: they would only really catch you stealing when its too late for them to prevent it. Think of it like those cops in the subways who are on the lookout for pickpockets. They only really catch the thieves AFTER they are in possession of the item, but are unable to actually prevent them from getting it in their hands.

In the case of wine maids, they assist everything there anyway, so they would all end up attacking the moment one does.

Steal is also modified by the number of mobs in the room who might notice, whether they assist or not.

Even taking that into account...

I'll post some logs with some better examples.

I get what ganks saying.....

He steals succesfully, then they all aggro afterwards? Seems messed up.

I would've figured if you were succesful then you would be left alone.

Like if someone jacked my wallet without me noticing, then me and my friends wouldn't do anything.

If I noticed, me and my friends would run that bastard down and mutilate him.

It just seems to make more sence that way. A succesful thief should not have to fend off anyone.

What if the thief jacked your wallet without YOU noticing but your friends noticed? Wouldn't they kick the shit out of him? Or would they ignore it since you didn't notice it?

I think what Gank was trying to show us was that they ALWAYS notice. If there is an assisting mob in the room and Gank steals then he will get attacked every time.

Maybe im missing something? I am hungover....

Heres a good example. I readily outlevel these mobs combined, and they *ALWAYS* catch me.

Inside the Mausoleum

You can see a massive sarcophagus just to the north. Whoever
was buried in this mausoleum must have been very rich and powerful
to warrant a tomb as large and beautiful as this.
Obvious exits: east, west, north, south.
You see two quasits.

(125 H 45 M 964123X): steal cand quasit 2
(125 H 45 M 964123X): You succeeded.
The quasit notices you in the act and attacks!
(125 H 45 M 964123X): ### Cujo broadcasted, "sake hurts me... The warm sake shots? Ooomph!"
The 2nd quasit quickly assists the quasit!
The 2nd quasit attacks you.
The quasit tried to bite you.
