Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
Why does lag protect sometimes fail? I had no timers or triggers. Lagprotect is on and autoattack is off. I was alt tabbed during the death. I know I probably shouldn't rely on lagprotect to keep me from dying, but I have connection problems anyways. If I am causing lagprotect to fail I would like to know how to correct it. I'm sure it had plenty of time to fire, I dodged a bunch and wasn't hit for more than 7.

Re: Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
You got beat up before it fired. Probably just barely, but you got killed before it fired.
It'll be less of a problem when you're higher level with more HP, better armor, and better defense. I think you just had bad luck. Nothing is wrong with lag protection. This is perhaps the 5th complaint about it "not working" since it was coded over 7 years ago. I can tell you it goes off fine with regularity. We log every time it fires. The help file for lagprotect says 10+ seconds, I'm currently letting a rat beat on my zerker in an attempt to get lagprotect to fire. I've ticked at least 3 or 4 times now while alt tabbed and lagprotect will not fire. Should I assume it only works if I'm genuinely lagged out? I seem to remember it used to work when I was afk too.

I'm using the same client I was using when it did work and I even unloaded all my settings and tried it.
Re: Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 3:03 pm
Is your client sending ANYTHING to the MUD? Lagprotect works on idle time. Unless Bane or Dom fucked with it somehow, it should still be the same. "There's nothing wrong with shooting, so long as the right people get shot." --Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry in Magnum Force

Re: Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 4:03 pmEdits: 1 Last Edit: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 4:15 pm
Would mushclient send anything to the mud and not tell me? I tried it with all the settings unloaded to make sure no triggers or anything would fire and got the same results. I did not have this problem a month or so ago and haven't changed clients or anything just my isp. It just doesn't work anymore. It should work on any mob I let hit me long enough right? I've just been testing on rats. None of my other preferences should affect it?
Also, I tried telnet and could not get lagprotect to fire. It's definitely not the client.
Re: Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
It's definitely your client / connection. I've noticed that your characters always have an idle time of 0, which means the mud thinks you are never idle. If your idle time is always 0, lag protect will never fire. You will also notice that you will never time out.
The mud is definitely receiving something from you atleast every second. It you have a way to debug raw input sent to the mud, that would help - maybe it's some sort of telnet negotiations or something your ISP is doing. I haven't looked into it much, but we can if it's impacting your gameplay. Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over. ![]()
Re: Lagprotect Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
I have changed my method of connecting to the internet recently. I switched from dialup to verizon's mobile broadband. It uses a little usb modem to connect to a satellite or something. This change correlates with lagprotect no longer functioning. Could that affect it somehow? Is there anyway around it?

Re: Lagprotect Sunday, February 14th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
It's likely a Mushclient option like anti idle or something.

Re: Lagprotect Monday, February 15th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Nope, as I mentioned in an earlier post I tried to get lagprotect to fire on telnet and could not. So that rules out the client. It must be related to my method of connecting to the internet. Is there nothing that can be done?

Re: Lagprotect Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 at 7:00 am
There are two things that can be done.
Immediate: use "set wimpy #". You will try and flee when you get below # hitpoints. It's not as nice as lagprotect, but it's better than nothing. Long term: figure out what text your connection keeps sending to the mud. Maybe it's a special "keep-alive" string of control characters. Once we figure out what it is, we can then figure out the best way to ignore it. This solution will take a bit of coding from us and some assistance from you.
