weapon skill and mages/lichesThursday, April 30th, 2009 at 11:36 pm Edits: 5 Last Edit: Thu, 30 Apr 2009 11:40 pm
I think there is an aspect of weapon skill that is being overlooked with regards to mages/liches. People now can only use a weapon if they have previously trained its corresponding weapon skill. This works fine for most classes, which can wield almost everything by default.
However, mages and liches can only wield certain weapons. When combined with the weapon skill requirement in order to be able to wield a weapon, this effectively mean we must waste a weapon skill in order to even test if a new weapon is compatible with our class. There are hundreds of weapons out there, but I have no way of knowing if my lich can wield them without first using up a weapon skill.
This may not be affect seasoned players who already know all the good mage/lich weapons out there, but for a new person like me who doesn't have that knowledge, it makes it impossible to train our weapon skills properly.
A good work-around for this would be to be able to wield all weapons which are compatible with your class, regardless of current weapon skill training. However, if you did not train in the specific weapon skill, then you can only do 1-5 damage with the weapon until you train the corresponding skill. This lets mages/liches pick up weapons, and do a "test wield" to know if we can use it, before we use up a weapon skill point.
Another work-around would be to put it in the description of the weapon if a mage or lich looks at it. For example, if a mage looks at a compatible sword, it would say "It looks like you can effectively wield this weapon with proper training" or something like that. If a mage looks at a non-compatible weapon, it would say "You cannot figure out how to use this weapon" or something like that.
I think the first suggestion is better.
