Hardcore Halloween Tournament
Starting 12:00 AM, the morning of October 31st, 2008, the 10 year anniversary of Realms of Hell, the
Hardcore Halloween Tournament will begin.
The Goal
At 12:00 AM, the morning of December 1st, 2008, the highest level hardcore character will win the tournament.
The Rules
* The most important thing to remember is that for a hardcore character,
death is permanent. When you die, your character will be deleted. This can be death because of a lagout (and then being killed by something), death by a monster, death by a trap, or even death by another hardcore character (read
How Do I Enter below: normal characters cannot participate). If a staff member somehow causes your death, you will be restored.
Hardcore characters may still duel each other. However, this will make you extremely vulnerable, and if you are killed because someone forgot to set the duel, you will not be restored.
* Roleplaying will be required. Characters who have inappropriate names (Steve, Joe, Circledude) are not eligible to win this tournament. Translation: if you get to level 40 with a character named Stabtime, you will not win the tournament.
* Botting is not allowed. If you are caught botting, any hardcore characters you create will be deleted.
* Training will be free and automatic.
* Your character will be chaotic starting from level 1.
* Hardcore characters will start with double hit points and double magic points. This'll make things slightly less-lethal at low levels.
* A map of Oceancrest will be made available for sale at the Tree of Life in game.
How Do I Enter?
To enter the tournament, create a new character any time between October 31st and November 30th. When given the choice of a starting location, choose
Oceancrest. Your character will be created as a hardcore character.
The city of Oceancrest (some of you may remember it from the Chaos mud) will be completely disconnected from the world of Derlith.
You will not be able to teleport across the boundary.
You will not be able to track across the boundary.
You will not be able to be summoned across the boundary.
You will not be able to send items across the boundary.
You will not be able to transfer gold across the boundary.
This means that high level characters will not have an advantage over low level characters, as you will not be able to use any existing character to benefit a newly created hardcore character.
Disclaimer: We didn't create Oceancrest. We imported the rooms, monsters, and objects freely available from Chaos mud. There's no guarantee there will be an appropriate number of certain weapon types or certain armor types available on that side of the boundary. Everyone will face the same difficulty.
The Prize
There are two prizes to win.
One-Day Tournament
If one month is too long to hold your attention, you can instead attempt to win the 1-day version of this tournament. On November 1st at 12:00 AM I will copy all the players to an external computer. The highest level hardcore character at that time will win the first prize. This version of the tournament will take place only on Halloween.
The prize for winning this part of the tournament will go to a non-hardcore character of your choosing.
1st place: 1 million gold pieces
2nd place: 250,000 gold pieces
3rd place: 125,000 gold pieces
One-Month Tournament
The winning hardcore character will be the highest level character as of the 1st of December. Once this deadline occurs, the creation of hardcore characters will be disabled and all hardcore characters (except for the winner) will be disabled.
* The winner will cross over into Derlith (with the hardcore flag removed) and be able to keep any items or spells they acquired while in Oceancrest.
* The rooms you will play in are released to the public to use with
our code. We will work with the winner of the tournament to create a permanent monster located in the Tree of Life with whom future characters will be able to interact.
* Amavi has volunteered to draw the winning character. She's completed the
Matron Mother of Oakspire as a sample of her abilities.
1st place: 5 million gold pieces
2nd place: 2 million gold pieces
3rd place: 1 million gold pieces
A painting (an in-game object with a nice description) of the two winners will be hung in places appropriate for the character.
I'll continue to revise this document over the next couple days. More posts as information becomes available!
