Multiclass penalty adjustment for 30+? Friday, September 26th, 2008 at 2:54 amEdits: 8 Last Edit: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 3:06 am
Since Bane is lazy ... I recall Ocelot mentioning cutting down the experience penalty for multiclasses after level 30. I scoffed at the idea at the time since I figured one should work hard for having some extra skills. Furthermore, I was thinking new skills and many new areas would be prepared for 30-40.
But lately, after doing some math, it seems like a big hit with how things are now. While I take pride in having suffered so long already, I'm not sure if it's very worth it with the 75% in effect after level 30. This will probably improve as more new places are put in and even with the new magic system coming. But such things shouldn't be rushed and I think this would be a quick fix for now.
So I did some Excel work --> listed is the amount of experience needed for a multiclass to level (which should be the same as the table), followed by how much a normal non-multiclass player would have (multiclass_xp*1.25), and finally how much experience is lost for being a multiclass past level 30.
By leveling a 40 multiclass, you could almost have another level 30! By tweaking the penalty to 87% -- I just picked it for a random, seemingly-reasonable end value -- after 30 (so the 75% is still applicable for levels 30 and below) you'd have ...
... doesn't look as ugly? Maybe?
Of course, this is just based on a few personal considerations:
* Everyone should know this by now: I absolutely despise grouping for experience. But don't get me wrong! I've done a lot of exploring/searching new areas with guildies, I'm always up for big buff perms, and I'm a carebear when it comes to helping newbies. But I've always liked being known as a competitive and independent player as far as leveling goes. Being dependent on having a group to get my experience just doesn't sit well with me at all (unless you're a class with bad damage output anyways: see healers).
* As a soloing multiclass mage + my play style (lots of ticking!), I average at about 100k-120k experience per hour with the mid 20 to 30 mobs. The new 30+ mobs give more experience per kill, but they are meaty and thus take more time to kill (about 70k-80k/hour). Therefore, even with the experience reduction for killing lower leveled mobs, it is more efficient to kill smaller mobs faster than trying to tackle those new big mobs. But I still find this silly because this is less experience/hour than what I used to get pre-30.
* Again, I'm always up for hard quests and challenging perms. I've loved all of that stuff I've seen so far. But I'm not down for even more endless hours of grinding that doesn't take much thought. I really do think the hard part about leveling is finding the right place for the best experience in the shortest amount of time. I don't want to spend more time than I have to stun-hit/casting crap in the same place.

That was very nicely done. And although I would never call Bane lazy, I have to agree that through your work it does seem that 30+ needs tweaking.
To be honest Usagi, it's all part of us being 'playtester' for the current mud, and 30+ is only about a month old. This kind of feedback is excellent, and I think it helps our role as playtesters when players write out things in a helpful and concise way to see that things are corrected and balanced for the future.

Thank you, Bane! <3
** Oh. When is this going to be live? I was also wondering if I could get compensated for the experience I've earned past 30 with this change in effect. I'll avoid gaining experience until I get an answer about this one, that way I can keep at what I earned on the old penalty.
