I don't think you guys understood what they were proposing. They said strangeletes could appear and possible tiny black holes.

If you know anything about a black hole then you know they suck in matter and collapse it. Now, assume just one or a few of them were created, just a centimeter wide, sinking into the Earth and collapsing matter. It would take a while, sure, if they didn't grow any bigger. But it could have catastrophic results.

But the odds of it doing that are one in a million, but they have proven, at least in the most up to date theoretical physics, that is it possible. And that possibilty is what concerns people. Since, to be honest, no one really knows for certain what the outcome will be.

Number of times the world was proved not to be flat before Magellan/Colombus? 0 (despite thousands of years of scientists trying to convice people otherwise)

Number of times the world was proved not to be the center of universe pre-Copernicus? 0

Who know's what'll happen? Certainly not me.

That's not really how black holes work. Take the sun, for example. If it got crushed down into a black hole, would it suck in the entire solar system? Well, no - the mass is the same, so everything would continue orbiting exactly as it is. The pull of gravity would remain the same (as long as we kept our distance).

The event horizon of a black hole is determined by it's mass (because, well, that's all that really matters when it comes to black holes). To create a black whole about a centimeter wide, you'd need to mass of the Earth (the sun would be 3km, says Wikipedia). So to create a black hole even the size of a centimeter, the entire Earth would need to be crushed down into a single point.

I don't really know what the LHC is doing to create black holes, but if they did, they're probably only using a few kilos at most. I think at this point you could argue the black holes are so small (probably measured on the atomic scale) they'd evaporate before anything really happened.

They theorized that any black holes created would collapse soon after, but there's no evidence that they always will.

You guys make me LOL. There is a black hole at the center of our galaxy and it hasnt sucked us up yet after billions of years. I doubt these guys can create anything that will suck up the world. Although I can see why some of you are wanting it, as it will be the only time you will have anything sucked.

You doubt it, therefore it must be so.

I'm pretty sure everyone that's posted on this topic is currently in a relationship - but either way, way to keep it mature.
